The Jala Sanniya mask handicraft, part of Sri Lanka’s traditional Daha Ata Sanniya, symbolizes illnesses linked to excessive sweating. It represents a demon believed to cause such ailments, reflecting deep-rooted Sri Lankan folklore. In the sanni yakuma ritual, we use the mask to exorcise diseases and restore balance.
Handcrafted from kaduru wood, the mask features exaggerated expressions, including a fierce face with sharp teeth and bulging eyes. Moreover, its intricate carvings and bright, fiery colors depict the intensity of illness and spiritual energy. Transitioning from ritual use, these masks now serve as decorative items symbolizing Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. Despite modern adaptations, their spiritual and artistic essence remains intact.
Artisans follow a detailed process, starting with selecting soft wood that allows for precision carving. After, shape the mask and smooth its surface before painting it with bold, vibrant colors. The mask’s appearance is maintained with the use of traditional natural dyes, preserving its authenticity and brilliance. Consequently, each wooden mask is unique, blending creativity with time-honored traditions.
